Former San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis recently joined the 49ers Gold Standard Podcast Network on behalf of Abbott, and didn't hold back when it comes to Brock Purdy.
"He's one of the best. He's one of the best in the league. He's definitely in the top three, in my opinion.
He has everything that it takes to be a winning quarterback. He's very poised in the pocket. He can run, he can scramble, he has great instincts, and a great arm. He has a lot of ability of some of our past quarterbacks. I think he's just a tremendous talent."
Considering the quarterbacks that Vernon played with in his career, it's an interesting perspective. Davis knows what's it's like to play with a physical marvel like Colin Kaepernick, and he also got to see a QB that won with his head more than his arm while playing for Peyton Manning's Denver Broncos.
Later in the interview Vernon did throw one caveat into the mix going forward:
"The only way for me to really have faith in Brock Purdy and know that he is who we see him to be, is consistency, and that comes over time."
The comment throws into sharp relief how important this year is for Brock Purdy. Another solid season earns him a contract worth $60 million a year. Struggle or get injured and you're looking at another prove-it type season in 2025 - or worse.
Vernon recently took part in a soccer clinic that Abbott and Real Madrid Football Club hosted for pro athletes and influencers where the participants received direct instruction from Real Madrid coaches. When asked about the whether he was still the best athlete on the field that day...let's just say Vernon hasn't lost faith in his abilities.
